Our job as Physical Educators is to teach students how to live an healthy active lifestyle. We teach students in a variety of ways from doing exercises, stretches, health lessons and a variety of games. We also teach a sport based program, which means we try to teach all of the sports we can with the focus being on the basics. Some examples include basketball, soccer, gymnastics, football, jump rope, and this year we are trying tennis.

What Does FUTP60 do for us?
    1) It’s free. And there’s Funds available.
It’s free to be part of Fuel Up to Play 60. No hidden fees, and no shipping and handling charges!
Plus, up to $4,000 is available to schools each school year through the competitive Funds for Fuel Up to Play 60 application process!
    2) This is a commitment to the health of the next generation.
Fuel Up to Play 60 is the in-school nutrition and physical-activity program founded by National Dairy Council® (NDC) and the National Football League, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
    3) The NFL brings high-profile excitement!
Fuel Up to Play 60 activities and offerings are carefully structured and timed to coincide with significant events on the National Football League calendar. As a result, the program trades on the big-time excitement of everything from the first NFL game day in the fall, to the Super Bowl at mid-year, to NFL Draft in the spring. No other school-wellness initiative offers this kind of association and impact.
    4) The program is two-pronged – nutrition and physical activity.
Fuel Up to Play 60 focuses on promoting healthier eating and more physical activity opportunities school-wide. Along the way, students become empowered to lead – by making healthy decisions, taking action for change and encouraging their friends to do the same.
    5) Students are at the center of the program and critical to make positive healthy changes that last after they graduate. That’s why Fuel Up to Play 60:
Encourages students to Fuel Up with nutrient-rich foods they don’t get enough of – low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains.
Motivates kids to be more active and play for at least 60 minutes a day.
Creates an environment that encourages healthy and high-achieving students and schools.
    6) Fuel Up to Play 60 is as simple or extensive as students – and you – want.
In a nutshell, using the program’s Playbook, students and adults work together to select and implement a series of "Plays" that result in long-term changes in nutrition and physical-activity practices. Throughout the school year, students organize and take part in Pledge campaigns, track their healthy eating and physical activity, compete in nationwide video challenges and lots more. Leaders emerge. New habits are learned. Commitments are kept. Success is recognized. Change happens.
    7) Kids want their school to be a healthier place. Just ask them.
Students know a healthier school benefits everyone. Helping them prioritize healthy eating and physical activity encourages them to perform better and contribute to their long-term health. And an added bonus is that Fuel Up to Play 60 can get teachers and staff eating healthy and moving more, too. Bottom line: Fuel Up to Play 60 is designed to help you improve the health, achievement and long-term well-being of everyone in your school!
    8) Rewards and incentives all school year for students, adults and your school.
Both students and adults enjoy a range of prizes, rewards and accolades just for taking part in Fuel Up to Play 60 – everything from banners and badges to program Prize Packs worth hundreds, and even thousands, of dollars. Special recognition is offered to top Program Advisors, too, and to schools that do everything from submit Success Stories to create their own Playbook “Plays.” Schools can even compete for Funds up to $4,000 to help execute Fuel Up to Play 60 program activities. And speaking of rewards, teachers can be eligible to receive Continuing Education credits for both learning about and taking part in Fuel Up to Play 60.
    9) Health and P.E. Standards are at the core of the program.
Fuel up to Play 60 supports nationally recommended standards for health and physical education/physical activity – including National Health Education Standards, National Standards for Physical Education and the Guidelines for Physical Activity for Children 5-12. The program also helps schools meet their wellness goals and complements national initiatives, including the White House's Let's Move! campaign, the U.S. National Physical Activity Plan, the USDA's HealthierUS School Challenge and the CDC's Coordinated School Health Program.
    10) Well-nourished, fit students do better in school. Period.
Research shows well-nourished kids tend to be better students, have stronger academic achievement and better test scores, and numerous studies show physical activity has been found to support learning and may help students improve self-esteem, cognitive function and test scores.
Everything you need to get started is right here on our website. Did we mention it’s all free?

The NutriGram has also been developed by the Cooper Institute to help us track the students knowledge of nutrition. We use a full week to take the classes one class at a time into the computer lab to take the NutriGram surveys. There are 2 surveys that the students take. One survey ask questions to gain knowledge of the kids healthy habits and the second test actual nutrition knowledge. It is an expectation for our school to test all students in grades 3-5 twice during the 2012-2013 school year.
